Video: Inside Freshman Orientation
Note: Phil Cleary is a member of Gusties for Restoring America.
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors in those first few days or even hours after you drop your son or daughter off for their first year of College?
At many college's and universities, the thought reform and attitude adjusting starts early -- before ever entering the classroom. These activities are something that can easily be caught on tape and shared with the public.
Below is the "inside look" at how incoming students of Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN are introduced to college life.
This second thought-reform seminar (different from the first, which I shared with you earlier this week) introduces students to all the basic canons of western thought that are crucial to a liberal arts education:
- Understanding "LGPBBTTQ&A"
- How to discern the difference between your "sex" and your "gender"
- A call to censor the content of speech after screaming cuss words at students in the dark
Helpful to keep in mind while watching is that this college presents its mission as tied to the fact that it is a college of the church: It is a "private residential liberal arts college firmly rooted in its Swedish and Lutheran heritage."

Absolutely disgusting that this is being forced on people, and a disgrace that this college is named after such a great historical figure

I guess I missed the "being forced on people" and "A call to censor the content of speech " except in response to the skit

As an alumna both of Gustavus Adolphus College AND the Orientation Program (as a 3-year Gustie Greeter), I can assure you that nothing is being "forced" on anyone. the CHOICE to be exposed to a broad, engaging, and sometimes controversial and uncomfortable world outside of one's hometown begins when the students choose to attend Gustavus, which is a self-declared "church-related, residential liberal arts college firmly rooted in its Swedish and Lutheran heritage. The College aspires to be a community of persons from diverse backgrounds who respect and affirm the dignity of all people. It is a community where a mature understanding of the Christian faith and lives of service are nurtured and students are encouraged to work toward a just and peaceful world." - From the Gustavus Adolphus College Mission statement.
Anyone, including Mr. Cleary, who was surprised to find acceptance and respect to be a vital characteristic of life on the Gustavus campus obviously did not research the institution well before making his decision to attend. If he failed to read and understand the mission statement, then he has no one to blame but himself. Which may be an uncomfortable realization, Mr. Cleary, but let me suggest that the sooner you accept it, the easier it will be.
If your fragile sensibilities are offended, so be it. But there has NEVER been a war or genocide caused because a country or group was too respectful or too accepting of another culture, race, religion, or sexuality.
Keep your hate to yourself.

This has made national news, and yes, I had to create an account to reply.
Everyone needs to know that there really is a true and living God and that He really does have standards that apply to all mankind. Part of my Lutheran heritage was to memorize the catechism, but there always was an emphasis upon keeping God's laws.
On Friday, August 30, 2002 I had a terrible automobile accident in which I died. I left my body only to discover that I was chained up, both wrists and ankles were bound and then they were doubly bound up. I was headed straight toward hell and a screaming voice shouted so loudly that it hurt my ears "He's mine, He's mine, He's mine, his name is liar, liar, liar, I am taking him to the lake of fire" and down we went.
None of you can even begin to imagine the fear I felt at that moment. My visiting prostitutes and indulging in internet [explicit] had really brought all this upon me and all I could think of was "the wages of sin is death" and "God is not mocked, whatsoever a man sows, that shall he reap"
So I urge all readers to carefully consider their lifestyle. Is it in accord with God's standards? Or are we picking our own?
Mine almost got me killed for all eternity. Hell is very real.
Think carefully about this. The only reason I am alive today and can even write to you all, is because of the grace of God.

Wow Randall, what you wrote has and is continuing to impact my soul. If possible please tell me more.
I believe my dreams will visualize your description of what happened to you. Gods Grace is bountiful and healing.

Kinda wonderful this was brought to the attention of donor and donors-to-be alike. None of my charitable contributions will fund this type of "hypocrisy". Whatever happened to avoiding the "appearance of evil"
God bless the whistleblower.

Homosexuals are beautiful people that need to be loved just like everyone else. However, we don't have to be a slave to our sexuallity. It may feel like we need it, but actually we don't have to have sex in order to survive in this world. We need food, water and shelter, but not sex! Sex is just a selfish thing. Selfish people want to have sex. Unselfish people give it away. If you love the LORD with all your heart, you can give it up and HE will bless you beyond your wildest dreams in good time.

Phil - I am proud of what you are doing to alert parents (and students) to the indoctrination that goes on in many colleges & universities. ELCA has been LINO (Lutheran In Name Only) for quite some time now, but that does not excuse the graphic indoctrination of freshman at their college. The student audience laughter sounded nervous and surprised on your videos. Unfortunately, many Catholic universities are involved with "social justice" and "diversity" also. Parents, Beware! Do your research and explore college websites and walk around the colleges looking at the "upcoming events" boards plastered around campuses. Get an idea of what is being promoted at colleges before sending your children there.
That said, there are still many socially conservative great colleges in the country...do your research and spare your children from indoctrination.
Keep up the great work, Phil. You have a great and promising future!

Wow.
I urge the acceptance and love of all people, but not their choices.
The poster who identified sex as in terms of selfishness and selflessness makes a brilliant point.
This presentation is about acceptance? At a very base level perhaps. This skit is simplistic. Identifies the haters and the hated. Is purely dichotomous in terms of hero and villian and ignores the moral process by which people reach their views. This was "pocohantes" and the tree-cutters all over again. "Disney deep".
The skit also managed to devalue all sexuality by being so matter of fact. and glib. Nothing about personal committment / responsibility. Just people who want to have fun and those who hate the way they do that.
One poster mentions that students who sign up to attend a church related college with broad liberal arts background should expect to be exposed to controversial and sometimes uncomfortable ideas. Would we agree that Students making certain sexual lifestyle choices ( both heterosexual and LBG......... ) may need to realize and accept that when they attend a "Christian College" that they will find people who disagree with their choices? Could those Gusties who disagree with LBG sexuality be operating from a valid or at least defensible moral framework... rather than hate?
Lets just hope that such disagreement with LBG sexuality is in utter respect and love for the person, if not the choices they make. Lets also hope that those LBG students who hear such disagreement do not automatically assign the motive to hate. Like, the skit, that type of thinking is childish, self-serving, and shallow. Asking people to turn off , or change their moral filter in order to accomodate our ideas is childish. Makin sexuality triteand matter of fact in the manner of this skit is childish. Asking that a community accept our ideas about sexuality as equal with long established views is shallow, and self serving.
If the class of 2014 will blindly accept the validity of those ideas, that is not something that I would view as a good first step in anyones college education. Critical discussion / debate on those ideas in terms of a moral framework would be a wonderful start to a higher education. At a Christian College, that moral framework should be the Bible. If we are creating our own moral system, why pretend to be church affiliated at all?
There are a depth of issues to explore in terms of how we interact and disagree. Art can be both a window and a mirror to those interactions. This skit was neither. The message I got was WE ARE HERE. OUR IDEAS BELONG AND ARE NOW PART OF THIS COMMUNITY, SEE US. ACCEPT US. I would hope the response would be "You are here. We do see you. We do accept, love and befriend you. ...but some of your ideas do not belong amongst the core values of this community.. and we wish to define the values of this institution apart from your ideas on sexuality."
Good luck to ALL students as they grow and learn
Former Gustie.

I am a freshman this year at Gustavus Adolphus. This is is the I Am We Are skit group, they raise awareness about peoples experiences of sexualities and the hate they receive everywhere and much more. This was an OPTIONAL performance to watch, though I found it very eye opening to everything around me. This person PERSONALLY EDITED OUT PARTS of I Am We Are to make it seem like a conspiracy part related to the school. I believe that if this person were to show the ENTIRE video this would be no worries for anyone at all. It was only food for thought for freshman who did listen to it. The GLBT and Q&A were only parts of the skit, they also talked about suicide, depression, family matters, eating disorders, just issues people on campus have gone through in their lives. I am NOT embarrassed by my school. I AM EMBARRASSED BY THE PERSON who edited it this way to make everything look horrible.

I am also a freshman at Gustavus, and I too attended this skit. I can confirm the above comment, and that Cleary purposefully edited out the most important parts of the skit. If Cleary does not agree with the GLBT friendliness of the school, then he is welcome to transfer at any time (and should have done his research before he decided to attend this school). Otherwise, I would suggest that he stops twisting the truth to make this seem like a terrible place. I love this school.

I AM also a freshman here at Gustavus and also attended this performance. Yes I agree the video is edited. Yes I agree that there were other topics discussed in the performance. BUT you cannot excuse any of the disgusting, disturbing and offensive parts in this video. It is absolutely unbelievable that a PRIVATE, LUTHERAN CHURCH AFFILIATED COLLEGE, is pushing the agenda of atheism, homosexuals and promoting sexual behavior. They have twisted this whole performance to make it seem like religious, straight and people who believe in abstinence are not the norm. Why isn't Gustavus promoting self-determination and self-reliance. Gustavus really has gotten their "core values" mixed up. I guess I have should of looked harder into this so called "church-affiliated" college before I committed to coming here. Seriously disappointing in my eyes.
